Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Diabetic Neuropathy in Seniors

According to the CDC’s latest National Diabetes Statistics Report, nearly 30% (16.5 million) of Americans over 65 years of age have diabetes. Further estimates indicate that 50% of diabetics aged 65 and over suffer from diabetic-induced peripheral neuropathy (DIPN), which primarily affects the sensory nerves in the hands, feet, and lower legs.

Evidence for Acupuncture Relief

Dozens of random controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews have found that acupuncture is effective in easing the pain, numbness and other symptoms involved in those suffering from PN including diabetic PN. A link to a comprehensive list of those studies can be found at the bottom of this page in our submission to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Acupuncture Aids Nerve Regeneration

The ACUDIN trial, published in the Journal of Diabetes, demonstrates that classical needle acupuncture significantly improves nerve conduction studies (NCS) in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). This improvement suggests structural neuroregeneration, a breakthrough not seen with other treatments. The study provides robust evidence supporting acupuncture as a viable option for managing nerve damage in type 2 diabetes. Full study details can be found in the linked publication.

Acupuncture Reduces Diabetic Numbness

Description: A 2023 study in the World Journal of Diabetes highlights acupuncture’s effectiveness in reducing numbness and sensory loss in diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). The study reports a significant 32% reduction in numbness over 8 to 16 weeks. This novel approach emphasizes the importance of sensory improvement in preventing complications like gait disorders and diabetic foot. The findings show that repetitive acupuncture treatments are well-tolerated and lead to high patient satisfaction, addressing symptoms that current medications cannot. Detailed findings are available through the provided study link.

Expanding Medicare coverage

The Acupuncture Now Foundation is working to get the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to approve coverage for acupuncture in treating peripheral neuropathy (PN) – a process called a National Coverage Determination (NCD). We submitted a document explaining the research on acupuncture for PN along with copies of 72 research studies. This document offers the most comprehensive review of the research on acupuncture for PN and is available here for anyone interested in doing a deep dive investigating that research.

Peripheral Neuropathy FAQs

What should I expect during an acupuncture session?

During a session, you’ll typically lie down on a treatment table. The acupuncturist will insert thin needles into specific points on your body. You may feel a brief, mild sensation when the needles are inserted. The needles are usually left in place for 15-30 minutes. Many people find acupuncture relaxing.

The number of sessions varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Some people experience relief after a few sessions, while others may require ongoing treatment. Your acupuncturist will create a personalized treatment plan.

Side effects are generally mild and may include soreness, bruising, or minor bleeding at the needle insertion sites. In rare cases, more serious side effects can occur. It’s crucial to seek treatment from a licensed and qualified acupuncturist to minimize risks.

Look for a licensed acupuncturist who is certified by a recognized professional organization. You can also ask your doctor for a referral. Check online reviews and ask about the acupuncturist’s experience and qualifications.
