In the UK, the practice of acupuncture is not regulated by the government, which means that a variety of people with varying levels of training are legally allowed to use acupuncture to treat people and membership with a professional acupuncture organisation is voluntary.

In the UK, acupuncture is practiced by three main groups:
Membership in the BMAS and AACP requires relatively short postgraduate training.
The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is the only group whose members meet the practice and training requirements set out by the World Health Organisation. BAcC members have a degree-level qualification with over 3,600 hours of study, and the BAcC is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
