Chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN)

The Prevalence of CIPN

Chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is the second most common side effect of chemotherapy estimated to occur at a rate of 68.1% within the first month of chemotherapy treatment, 60.0% at three months, and 30.0% at six months.

Evidence-Based Relief for Chemo PN

Dozens of random controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews have found that acupuncture is effective in easing the pain, numbness and other symptoms involved in those suffering from chemotherapy PN. A link to one of those studies is on the lower left portion of this page. Another link to a comprehensive list of those studies can be found at the bottom right of this page in our submission to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Acupuncture Found to Regenerate Damaged Sensory Nerves

Acupuncture has been shown to be effective for CIPN. In 2022, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) released a guideline titled “Integrative Medicine for Pain Management in Oncology” with the recommendation that acupuncture may be offered to patients with CIPN.

Since the time of that recommendation several newer studies have found acupuncture to be effective for CIPN. One important study used nerve conduction testing as the primary measurement and found acupuncture regenerated damaged sensory nerves that cause pain and numbness:

“Results: Sural sensory nerve amplitude, and sural nerve conduction velocity, were significantly improved.”

Acupuncture Advocacy: Expanding Medicare Coverage for Neuropathy

The Acupuncture Now Foundation is working to get the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to approve coverage for acupuncture in treating peripheral neuropathy (PN) – a process called a National Coverage Determination (NCD).

We submitted a document explaining the research on acupuncture for PN along with copies of 72 research studies. This document offers the most comprehensive review of the research on acupuncture for PN and is available here for anyone interested in doing a deep dive investigating that research.

Peripheral Neuropathy FAQs

What should I expect during an acupuncture session?

During a session, you’ll typically lie down on a treatment table. The acupuncturist will insert thin needles into specific points on your body. You may feel a brief, mild sensation when the needles are inserted. The needles are usually left in place for 15-30 minutes. Many people find acupuncture relaxing.

The number of sessions varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Some people experience relief after a few sessions, while others may require ongoing treatment. Your acupuncturist will create a personalized treatment plan.

Side effects are generally mild and may include soreness, bruising, or minor bleeding at the needle insertion sites. In rare cases, more serious side effects can occur. It’s crucial to seek treatment from a licensed and qualified acupuncturist to minimize risks.

Look for a licensed acupuncturist who is certified by a recognized professional organization. You can also ask your doctor for a referral. Check online reviews and ask about the acupuncturist’s experience and qualifications.
